Mechanochemical Characterisation of Calcined Impure Kaolinitic Clay as a Composite Binder in Cementitious Mortars

The availability of some supplementary cementitious materials, especially fly ash, is imminent concern in Europe due to the projected closure several coal-fired power generation plants. Pure kaolinitic clays, which arguably have potential replace are also scarce and expensive their use other industrial applications. This paper examines utilisation low-grade clays for construction purposes. clay sample was heat-treated at a temperature 800 °C evenly blended with Portland cement substitutions 10–30% by weight. physical, chemical, mineralogical mechanical characteristics calcined were determined. Frattini test proved pozzolanic impure clay, as plot its CaO OH− found below lime solubility curve. 28 days compressive strengths trailed reference 5.1%, 12.3% 21.7%, respectively, all replacement levels. optimum level between three blends be 20 wt.%.
